KUTAY: Intercultural Collaborative Theater in the New Normal
La Salle University (Ozamis city)
November 29, 2020
A cross-cultural theater collaboration among actors-teachers who graduated from the Intercultural Theater Institute (ITI) in Singapore. Although geographically separated, these theater practitioners and educators from Japan/Malaysia (NARITA Doppo), Hong Kong (Melissa Leung), India (Noushad Mohamed Kunju), and the Philippines (Felimon Blanco), worked together to produce an online performance.
The project has a three-point objective: 1. to experiment doing an intercultural collaboration online while keeping the essence of theater as a live art.; 2. to develop models of theater in the new normal where the physical stage moves to the virtual space; and 3) to find out and share how artists are coping in this difficult period of quarantine.
The online performance of KUTAY has reached close to six thousand people via FB and close to two hundred views on Youtube. A week after implementation, the organizer had an open online sharing of the performers’ creative process. Interested artists and students from India and the Philippines, mainly from Mindanao, joined the Zoom discussions.
